Project: NEMS e-Busz for Rotterdam, Netherlands

Project Netherlands' First Environmental friendly City bus (NEMS) consists of two VDL city buses converted to EV with TheWheel® SM500/3 motors.
Succeeding project Whisper, the NEMS busses will operate in Rotterdam. Whereas the target of project Whisper was to obtain reliability data of our system, main objective of project NEMS is to prove low energy consumption of our traction system. Technically, the NEMS busses are very similar to the Whisper buses and have the same advantages:
- A NEMS bus is 50% more fuel efficient compared to the standard diesel equipped bus
- A NEMS bus sustains extended zero-emission driving - key in achieving inner city emission standards.
- A NEMS bus is silent and keeps the inner city free of motor noise

What makes NEMS revolutionary
Motor drives, axle and suspensionTheWheel® is the core of the impressive energy efficiency of the NEMS bus; it saves up to 40% compared to an ordinary EV drive line. For more information see our TheWheel overview section
Energy storage and supplyThe next step in transition is adding an energy buffer. As described in the e-Traction system section Li-Ion batteries are installed. The capacity of this buffer allows zero-emission electric driving up to one hour of operation.
Range extender and auxilliariesA well designed buffer allows the use of a smaller power source. Both NEMS buses are equipped with a small diesel generator. Its size is comparable to a small SUV motor as is its fuel consumption.
