Project: Hybricon city busses, Umeå, Sweden
![]()
Zero emission operation all day. That is not a promise, but reality with the completion of 'project Hybricon'.
In cooperation with e-Traction, Hybricon SE converted two Volvo 7700 city buses to fully electric city bus with rapid charge technology. The buses will operate in the city of Umeå, Sweden - and will be tested in the climate of the operating area: near arctic conditions during winter, up to 30 degrees celcius during summer. e-Traction is honored to be partner in this project, in which our e-Traction system, including TheWheel® SM500/3 motors are tested to its limits at very low temperatures.
Zero emission with direct-drive
Rapid charging using pantograph technology is only feasible when vehicle energy consumption remains low. While conventional electric buses use 1,8 kWh/km on average, the converted buses in the Hybricon project only consume 1,1 kWh/km. When combined with a large Li-Ion battery package, an acceptable combination of rapid recharge vs. track length is achieved, while maintaining battery life.
