TheWheel™ SM450 in development

The same direct-drive technology that has been proven to yield considerable energy savings with e-Traction's first application, the city bus, will also benefit smaller vehicles. TheWheel SM450 is designed with this philosophy.

Design aim: automotive applications

Specifications

  • Wheelmotor with integrated power electronics
  • Water cooled electronics & motor package
  • Wheel diameter 450 mm
  • 400Nm peak torque.

Cost Challenge

The cost of the direct-drives will of course represent an important part of the vehicle cost. However, other components such as the batteries and other auxiliary systems will likely have a significant impact on the overall cost as well.

Discussions are currently underway on the possible conversion of a conventional delivery van with the e-Traction® System using a fuel cell as a generator. We are confident that a smaller vehicle equipped with the e-Traction system will also produce significant reduction in fuel usage.

University study

Below is a design study of three Dutch universities of "the Car of the Future" featuring four dummy units of TheWheel™ SM450/1AL, powered by a fuel-cell in a proposed All Wheel Drive and All Wheel Steering concept which was shown at the 2007 AutoRAI in Amsterdam.
