NEMS e-Busz enters service in Rotterdam.

17-06-2010 - The first citybus converted for the NEMS financed e-Busz project has been delivered by e-Traction. During a ceremony at the Willemsplein, underneath the shadow of the Erasmusbrug, the retrofitted citybus was handed over to the RET.

In the beginning the bus will be used on line 44, between Rotterdam Zuidplein and Rotterdam central station. With just a few corners and just a few bumps the route of line 44 is a relatively easy start for the e-Busz. When everything is functioning correctly and possible initial problems are solved, the bus will be tested on other, more difficult routes.

The NEMS project is a breakthrough in environmental friendly transportation. The main feature of the e-Busz is the direct-drive TheWheel system developed by e-Traction. This innovative system is not only environmental friendly, it is also easier and cheaper to maintain.

The main difference between the TheWheel system and a conventional traction system is the absence of a driveline. With TheWheel, the "engine" is inside the motor, we call this direct-drive technology. In a conventional system the power from the diesel engine is transferred from the engine through the driveshaft, gearbox and differential to the wheels. Making a conventional driveline a lot more complicated. Not only is this very inefficient in terms of loss of power, it also consists of more parts, making it more difficult and more expensive to maintain.

The use of direct-drive makes TheWheel very efficient, about 95% of the energy is used for traction. Compare this to a conventional city bus, which uses only 44% of it's energy, and you can truly speak of a "revolution in motion". To make it even more efficient the system features regenerative braking. When the bus brakes, the energy released by the brakes is absorbed and will charge the battery system.

It is not possible at the moment to drive completely emmission free. The batteries are not powerful enough yet to power the bus the whole day long. Therefore the bus is equipped with a modern diesel generator, this generator charges the bus while driving. And with the help of the onboard GPS it is possible to program the coordinates of certain areas in the system, when the bus enters one of those areas the generator is automatically switched off, making the bus driving absolutely emmission free. It is possibile to drive without generator for periods of up to four hours.

Now Rotterdam is the second Dutch city after Apeldoorn where the e-Traction TheWheel system is in regular daily service. Equipped with the e-Traction TheWheel system and with the help of the onboard GPS system it will be able to drive absolutely emmission free in the Rotterdam city center for the next two years.
